President Trump’s Second Trade War: A New Era of Economic Policy

President Donald Trump has reignited global trade tensions by initiating a new round of tariffs, aiming for a sweeping overhaul of the global trade system. His ambitions in this second trade war are broader and more aggressive than his first-term policies, with economic and geopolitical implications that could reshape international commerce.

Trump’s Expansive Tariff Threats

In his first week back in office, Trump declared plans to impose tariffs on over $2 trillion worth of imports, accounting for nearly two-thirds of all U.S. imports. The sweeping measures include tariffs targeting China, Canada, Mexico, and potentially other nations like Europe, Brazil, and India. Trump’s immediate focus, however, was on Colombia, where he imposed a 25% tariff on goods after a diplomatic dispute. The president warned that the tariff could double to 50% if the situation escalated.

This aggressive approach underscores a dramatic departure from his first term, when he focused primarily on individual sectors like washing machines and solar panels. Now, the administration aims to address broader issues, including illegal immigration, national security, and tax revenue, through its tariff strategy.
